Workshop Testimonials
"Joseph's presentation of 'An Organic Approach to FX' was one of the most popular and talked about workshops at the 2009 Ottawa International Animation Festival. Not only was his presentation a sell out success, but so were his copies of Elemental Magic: The Art of Special Effects Animation, at the Festival boutique."
"Joe Gilland has been a regular guest speaker in our classical animation program at Capilano University, and has always been an inspiration to our students. We recently asked Joe to provide some "Elemental Magic" for our overseas 3D animation program in Harbin, China. In a series of intensive lectures, Joe taught our Chinese students the foundations of special effects and how it applies to their work in 3D animation. Crossing cultural and language boundaries, Joe's workshop was a huge success. His visual approach to instruction allowed for students with limited English to follow along. Joseph has that rare skill that enables him to take complex theories and processes and deliver them in a way that first year animation students can easily understand. His enthusiasm and love of effects animation is contagious and allows Joe to draw the class into his world and understand his big picture view of effects animation. Joseph's visits to our classrooms in Vancouver and Harbin increase the value for our students and the results are visible in their grad reels."
What a great lecture! What can I say? Joseph's attitude, enthusiasm and professionalism captured a packed house of nearly 200 people and had them hanging on every word for over three hours. Awesome visual displays clearly illustrated Joseph's topics and made complicated effects easy to comprehend. His stories were entertaining, his explanations concise and his passion for effects animation infectious. Joseph was helpful and gracious from the moment I approached him with the idea of lecturing at Algonquin College, throughout the planning stages and absolutely wonderful to have amongst us while he was here. Not only did Joseph do the lecture, but he also took time to sign and elaborately illustrate each book that was brought to him, as well as spend one-on-one time with the students in the animation labs helping them. Joseph's generosity wasn’t lost upon the students and they are still discussing topics from his time here and asking when will be back.I would love to have Joseph back on a regular basis and hope that we can have him back for longer workshops in the future. Joseph captured the imaginations of all who were lucky enough to see him!

Joseph Gilland's workshop, 'Elemental Magic, An Organic Approach to Visual Effects Animation' is extremely popular with our students, and, as a result, Joseph has been back year after year.
Joseph has the uncanny ability to communicate timeless animation principles in a way that enables all of our students to benfit greatly from his workshops, whether they are hardcore 3D digital artists, or classical hand-drawn 2D artists. Participants in this workshop are given new tools with which to create vastly more dynamic and outstanding visual effects. The 'Organic Approach to Visual Effects' workshop, inspires students to step out of their digital comfort zone and explore visual effects in a hands-on, truly interactive way. The benefits are inestimable! Joseph works closely with each student one on one, giving generously of his time and knowledge, and inspiring them to dig deeper and find new and exciting ways to get the best performance possible out of their visual effects projects.
Without this workshop, our students might never be exposed to these extremely important animation principles.

The most impressive message from Joseph's workshops is that you have to experience the things you do. If you want to animate water, you have to live in water and observe it until you understand it. It's that kind of passion and energy that forces your work to the next level!

Book Reviews
"Those who are lucky enough to have worked with animation veteran Joseph Gilland know that he's one of the most knowledgeable guys in the business when it comes to creating eye-popping hand-drawn and digital effects. Luckily he's decided to share some of his wisdom with the rest of the world. Gilland also takes time to go back to the classic traditions of animation and explain how those techniques apply to digital works. The primer is a true labor of love, and its pages sparkle with smart observations, cool diagrams and priceless tips."
